Building a Ge Ge Thumbturn cylinder

Today we’re going to be making up a euro profile cylinder. It’s a very common cylinder, used on doors all over the place. We’re going to start off with just an empty, blank body like that. And we’re going to make it up so that it works with that key. So we can start off by, by filling the lock with the springs.

Could maybe have separated, off the springs first. That might save me a bit of time. Right?

And that is it filled up with its springs and drivers.

Being the tidy guy that I am, I’m going to put those away. And then we need to get out, this, the barrel, the part that the key goes into.
You can see I’m going for different drawers every time for different sizes of pin which are lifted different amounts by the different depths of the keys, the cuts of the key. So having filled it up, I’m going to test that I’ve got everything right because one could have got into the wrong drawer.

But that is nice and flush there. Nice and flat. And that means that when the key is in, all of those are level. So the key will turn in the cylinder. If they were up a little bit like that, you can see that that’s going a bit proud of the barrel.

That will then stick up into the body of the lock and stop it from turning. So having done that, we then get it into the lock body
like that.

Quick test that. It works and it does. Next thing to do is to put the cam in. Cam is this part that goes in here, the centre of the lockdown. It’s then we’ve got to fill in the rest of the components.

With this particular one, we’re putting a thumb turn on the inside, which looks like that, with a little coupling.

And that part is spring loaded. So I’ve got to figure out, not figure out, but I’ve got to get one of these separate. That goes down in there and then that, fits in there.

This is another tough pie, in fairness loaded. So to make sure they stay in, I’ve got to fix them in with circlips. But whilst I do that, of course, I’ve got to hold it in, place.

And that is it. One well looking cylinder.
