Can we cut a key to a lock if all the keys have been lost

Can we cut a key to a lock where you’ve lost all the keys? The answer to that question is generally yes, we can particularly with mortise locks and cylinder locks, yes, we can. What we need to do with those is you bring the lock in, we’ll take it apart, find out where the cuts need to be and how deep they need to be, and make a key up to it.

There are a few exceptions on that. There are some locks where obviously that process takes quite a while. And as they say, time is money, so it can sometimes be cheaper, particularly with lower end of the market locks. It’s cheaper to buy a new lock than it is to cut the key to it.

That’s particularly true with double glazed door locks and padlocks, particularly, as I say, the lower end of the range padlocks. With padlocks particularly, you can’t take the locks apart. There’s no screws or whatever to take them apart. So with padlocks, it’s incredibly difficult to cut a key to the lock, if you’ve lost all the keys.

So generally speaking, even with more expensive padlocks, generally speaking, it’s quicker, cheaper, to buy a new padlock. Hope that helps.
