Why do I need a professionally installed alarm?
I’ve often said that one of the major reasons to get an alarm system is because of the deterrent that it provides. Statistics show that around 80% of burglars are put off, uh, burgling a house if there’s, uh, an alarm system there. Which draws the question, well, why do I need a professionally installed alarm system if it’s just a deterrent?
Why don’t I get a cheap DIY system? Why don’t I just get a dummy bell box on the outside? Very, um, good question. What’s incontrovertible is that a professionally installed alarm system will cost more than a DIY system and that will cost more than a dummy siren being put up.
So if you’ve only got the budget for a dummy siren, yes, put one up. If you could afford a DII system, but you don’t think you can afford a professionally installed alarm system, then, yes, go for a DII alarm system, get the best that you can afford without going over the top.
Are there any significant advantages to buyingprofessionally installed system? Well, you could argue that I’m biassed, but yes, I think there are some significant advantages. The main one, I suppose, is that DIY systems that you buy from a DIY superstore or somewhere like that, the shops are selling what’s the most profitable for them at any given time.
So you’ll find that, you buy a system now and, maybe in five years, if you need to replace a sensor, or you want to put something additional in that you can’t go and buy another system or another component that’s compatible because they’ve changed suppliers or the manufacturer themselves has changed, what they do.
Now with a professionally installed system, we can still, service the systems that we were installing kind of 10-12 years ago, and the systems that we’re currently installing, we predict that we’ll be able to service those for another good 10-15 years before they become obsolete.
Obviously things will become obsolete over time, but it’s that length of time now, what’s best? Is it something that’s only going to be, in five years, serviceable in five years, but is cheaper or something that you pay a little bit more for but you won’t have to replace to keep a fully working system?
The other thing to note is that most burgers will know the difference between a DIY system and a professionally installed system. Most DIY systems don’t have encrypted sensors, so they can be more easily defeated, and the majority, of. No, that’s not fair. Some DIY alarm systems aren’t monitored either by a monitoring station or by, ah, an app on your phone.
A lot of them are these days, in fairness, but there’s a lot that aren’t, so a DIY system is m far more likely to be what we call bells only all it does is ring the siren. Now think about you at home. When you last heard an alarm siren or a bell going off.
Did you think, oh, I must phone the police because there’s a burglary going on? Or did you think, oh, subliminal nuisance. Bells only systems generally don’t do anything, significant if someone does burglary your house because no one takes any notice. Whereas something that’s, got an app on your phone which notifies you or which, if it goes through to a monitoring station, something will actually happen.
And that’s far more likely to be the case with a professionally installed system than it is with a DII system. So if a burger recognises the name on the siren box as being, a professional installation company, then they’re a little bit less likely to, risk it than they are with, a DII system.
So there’s a couple of really good reasons. I think. Like I said, you could accuse me of being biassed and I probably am biassed, but we do think that a professionally installed alarm system has some significant advantages. But like I said previously, if you’ve just got the budget for a DIY system or through a dummy siren box, then go for that, because it will provide you with a deterrent to burglary.
