So how important is having an Internet connection to a CCTV system? Well, the answer to that question depends on the type of cctv system, that you’ve got some record to the cloud, others record to a local recorder. So if you’ve got a system that records to the cloud then quite clearly an Internet connection is vital.

If you don’t have one then the signals can’t get to the cloud and you’re not going to record anything. Other systems which have a recorder on site, it’s not necessary because the recorder will always record. But if you want to be able to view either live or recorded footage from your system, um, remotely from when you’re not at ah, the place where the system is, then you need the internet connection to do that.

Most decent systems these days have an app on your phone. Most decent systems these days have, a windows laptop app that can be downloaded, that you can view your footage from. So again with that, if you want to do that then you have to have an Internet connection.

But like I said, if you don’t have one, the system will still record and you can still go to your local recorder,  and look at the monitor and look at live or recorded footage from there. Now just a quick note on Internet connection speed. Obviously uh, the quicker the Internet connection that you’ve got, the better it will be.

Even two megapixel,  systems generate an awful lot of data. All the footage is transmitted as data, as ones and zeros, and obviously a five megapixel and eight megapixel system will generate even more data. So the faster your Internet connection, particularly your upload speed, then the better, um, because then the footage will get to the cloud servers quicker, and then be downloaded quicker.
