Is my Network still secure?
So how does CCTV systems work? This video gives you a very basic idea and overview of the setup of cameras and recorders, etc. So keep watching to find out.
So how does CCTV system work? Well, in general, you have a number of cameras to monitor the areas that you want to keep an eye on, and they are connected to a recorder, via cables most systems these days can also connect to the Internet and provide you with an app and a means of viewing, the footage on your phone or on a desktop or laptop computer somewhere else.
There are two main ways that CCTV systems transmit, the data from the cameras back to the recorder you won’t be surprised to learn analogue and digital. Analogue uses the same technology as your old tv system works. It just transmits, the signal along the wires and it’s decoded back at the recorder.
Digital is also known as, or more commonly known as an IP system so called because it uses the exact same technology to transmit the images as the Internet uses to transmit all of its data and how a computer network in a building uses its data. So it’s all split into little packets of data so that in general you can actually get away with an IP system which just has one cable going back to the recorder.
The disadvantage, I suppose, of an IP system is that there is a slight kind of, or more obvious delay between, the image being recorded and being displayed on the monitor. We’re still only talking about less than a second delay, but you can just kind of make it out if you happen to be able to see the monitor and the actual live action with your eyes.
Anyway, other than that, IP systems tend to be more modern, um, and it’s certainly the way of the future, um, but whichever is best for you depends on you. If you’ve already got an older system, where the cameras are standard, ah, definition, and you want to upgrade to high definition, then why not just use the existing cabling?
If you’re installing new, then probably an IP system is the way to go. It’s just that bit more future proof. And all the new developments in CCTV will be using IP, in my opinion, so that’s what I think. But of course, as with all of these things, it’s whatever works best for you.
