So how do you include smart lighting into a smart home system? Well, there are three ways that you can do that. The first way is to have a smart light bulb. So these are, light bulbs which replace your existing ones. They’ve got the communication technology built into the base of them and you connect those to your smart home system and it controls them individually. Now obviously the disadvantage of those is that these light bulbs can be quite pricey and if you’ve got a kitchen like mine which has got lots of lights in, you’d have to replace every single bulb.

That can be a fair amount of money. Your second option is to have a small controller which you put into your existing light switch. Looks like that. It’s quite small although you may find that you might struggle to get that in, it’s certainly something that you wouldn’t want to do yourself.

But that then takes a signal, gets connected to the smart home system, takes the signal from that and turns on the light. It’s as if you’re magically flicking the switch without getting up off your chair to do it the last way of doing it is to replace the switch itself with one which has got the technology built into it.

So rather than having one of these added into your existing light switch, your switch has got that technology built into its switch mechanism. So again, they can be fairly expensive, but it’s the easiest way of doing it I think because you’re just using the existing wiring into the existing or into the new switch rather than having to change the wiring around or having to fork out for lots and lots of specialist light bulbs.
