The best alarm system for any home needs to be bespoke for the residents’ want and needs.

Remember that burglars want small stuff that’s easy to get rid of, so cash, jewellery, small tech items like laptops and iPads. They don’t have to have any great value, but they are still valuable to a burglar.
So start by thinking about how many rooms, upstairs and downstairs, have items like that? If they do, they need a motion sensor. It’s normally sensible to put another sensor on the landing to cover all eventualities, and a door sensor on the front door – but not necessarily on any rear doors, especially if the rooms there have sensors anyway.

Then consider the garage. Does this have any valuable equipment in? Bikes, maybe, or sports equipment, or tools. Again, burglars are looking for items that would make them a bit of cash. If it does, then we’d recommend a dual-technology motion sensor. These are less prone to false alarms caused by air currents than a normal sensor.

Lastly, think about a conservatory – does this have something stealable, like an entertainment set-up? If so, you would need 2 or 3 vibration sensors, as normal motion sensors are less reliable behind the large amount of glass in a conservatory.

One other thing which we’d recommend is that the siren be placed on the front wall of the house, to make sure any potential burglars know that yours is not an easy target, and they’d be better off trying somewhere else.
