In the first of our series on the factors that you need to consider when you are looking at installing a CCTV system is the design of cameras.
Now, I’m not talking about where the cameras are going to be placed on your building. That’s for a video for later on in the series. I’m talking about the design of camera that you’re going to use.
There are two major designs or types of camera.
The first is the bullet camera and the second is the dome camera. The dome camera can have a vandal resistant dome, or it can be just a plain dome camera, often called a turret camera. Obviously the vandal resistant dome is for use in areas where vandalism is likely to occur, particularly on the outside of buildings, particularly in industrial areas, which maybe have less activity at night. It depends on the area that you are building is in as to whether you think it’s necessary to use those.
One thing to note about the vandal resistant dome, though, is that they’re a little bit more prone to scratches and rain can affect the view from them a little bit more. When it comes to a standard turret camera or a bullet camera, that one’s really entirely up to your choice.
It’s what you think is looking best in your building, some people think that a turret or dome is better inside and a bullet outside. Personally, I don’t think it matters one way or the other. It’s all about what you find the most aesthetically appealing.
The other thing to say on this is there are another couple of different cameras that I haven’t mentioned. The fish eye camera is a flat camera. It’s used for viewing a 360 degree view in a room.
And then you also have pan tilt zoom cameras or robotic cameras, which look slightly different again. They are a bit more like “Big Brother”and have specific uses, which again, we’ll come to later on in the series.
