"I Don't Want An Alarm System"

“I don’t want an alarm system, if you’ve got an alarm system, it advertises to burglars that you’ve got something worth stealing.” Said the person I was chatting to at a networking event the other day.

So I asked them to define what they thought “Something Worth Stealing” is. Antique furniture, works of art, valuable jewellery was the answer.

And I asked them where they lived. They said they lived in the suburbs of the city.

So how many of their neighbours DO have antique furniture, works of art and valuable jewellery? They didn’t know of anyone who did.

Makes you wonder why burglaries happen in city suburbs. Why isn’t it only 10 bedroom mansions with 2 acres of grounds that get burgled?

They didn’t answer that.

The truth is that they do have something worth stealing. And so does everyone else.

Yes, even you, dear reader, sitting there trying to pretend that it wouldn’t happen to you. Because that’s what my contact was doing.

Trying to avoid thinking about it.

We all have something worth stealing. We all have loose cash, credit cards, cheap jewellery, laptops, mobile phones, games consoles and games.

Oh, and hand sanitiser, toilet rolls and pasta, apparently.
