THIS IS ONE OF MY PET PEEVES

Please feel free to imagine me jumping up and down in a red rage.

We’ve just been called out to a block of flats. The block of flats has a communal door fabricated from uPVC – you know, the (usually) white plastic that many people have on their homes.

Now, I’ve never been a fan of uPVC on communal doors. The locking mechanisms that are used just aren’t heavy enough duty for a door that takes that much use.

But whilst that’s an annoyance, it’s only a minor part of my peeve.

The reason we’ve been called out is that the door has been deadlocked, and has now jammed. Nobody can open that door.

Let’s just take a moment or two to fully digest that.

Nobody

In that block of flats

Can open the main door.

Can you imagine what would happen if that building were to suffer a fire right now? Can you imagine the panic in those people?

And I’m left wondering what flavour of idiot is it that is asked to fabricate a communal door for a block of flats and doesn’t disable the deadlocking function of the lock?

Please, if you live in a flat – just pop down to the communal door. Is it uPVC? Can you deadlock the door?

If you can – get it changed.

BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
